Well, in spite of my whining it all turned out ok.
I just started up in run mode 3 and ran XFdrake
as someone suggested. Good to know about the
alt-key trick, however. I certainly don't think
Windows is perfect, nor do have any warm fuzzy
feelings for MS, but you have to admit that even with
the slick graphics of Mandrake, there are many
little flaws that still make Linux feel clumsy by
comparison. I think it is because so much of it is built
on top of very old command-line programs. Its a
little like when Windows was built on top of DOS.
Somebody needs to do a commercial GUI front
end that's not built on X and some legacy window
manager. If I could always get the kernel for free
I would be happy to pay for a slick UI with a
well-designed API. Looking at the KDE and
Gnome APIs I was not impressed. Too haphazard.
That's the problem with most FOSS.
