Instead of the group picking a distro to standardize the install fests
on, the users should pick which they feel is best. What might be a good
idea is to create a nice presentation, like impress or just on paper,
from each of us on different distros, why we prefer that particular
distro, then have them assorted like brochures.
As they (users) try to decide on a distro, they can pick up a brochure
and read what the comments are. Maybe have small pictures on each one.

Having them on the website first, so others who use that same distro can
add comments to it before we print it out for the install fest might not
be too bad either.
