I am using a Debian variant called Libranet. It comes with a 2.4.xx
kernel. I've even loaded a 2.6.xx kernel on my "stable" system. The main
problems I've had going between versions are typically a few renamed
drivers or semi-broken init script.

You could snag a kernel version of your choice, then follow these steps:

I've had to tweak init scripts, that's about it.
