We're dangerously close to starting a distro war on this list. ;-) Ah
well. Personally, I've been happy with Fedora. Fedora is pretty easy to
install and you shouldn't have any trouble finding binaries for whatever
program you'd like. I usually recommend that newbies start out with a
distro that is easy to install and well-supported so they can feel
relatively confident right off the bat. As you learn more about Linux
then trying a new distro isn't as intimidating because you've got most of
the basics down.
But whatever you decide, there's plenty of people on this list and
elsewhere that can help with the specifics of your choice.
