What part of the valley do you live in?
I'm an Oracle DBA and can probably help you.
I haven't installed 9i on linux before (still running 8.1.7), but it
sounds like you got that far already (good!).

Beyond that, Oracle is one huge learning curve (but don't let that
discourage you). Although there are a lot things to need to know to make
a database that works well (tuning is more of an art than a science), the
general database that is installed out of the box is good enough to learn
from.

Do you just need the client software or do you actually need to play with
a local database?
