Hi Vic,
Sorry your experience has been bad so far. However, in the lists defense ...
the first question from you I see was two days before christmas ... now avoiding
the holy war regarding that topic ... regardless of religion/belief that time of
year can be a disruptive time.
If you are throwing your hands up in disgust, I wish you luck with the
alternatives. If you want to address some of your questions, pause, take a few
deep breaths and hold back the urge to toss the computer out the window (we all
have that urge regardless of OS ... because the fundamental fact is ...
computers are tremendously complex devices that often suck). I know you know
all this, I can just hear your frustration and I am trying to sympathize.

Lets talk about that printer. OK HP Deskjet 5550 checks out OK on
linuxprinting.org so it ought to be able to work. You said RH 8.0 in an earlier
post ... so presumably you are using lpr (or some derivative right). Is the
printer USB or parallel?

PS - Please bear in mind, there is so little desktop vendor support in Linux
that you will save a lot of effort if you make educated hardware purchases. I
have a sound card that I have been moving from new computer to new computer
despite sound cards on the motherboards. This is because I know how to get that
sound card working and if sound doesn't come up immediately after install, I
know it will take me 10 minutes to get my old sound blaster live working ...
rather than goofing off for 30 minutes trying to get some possibly worthless
hardware working ... we've all got real work to do ... right?
