The reason I am giving her a computer is because a couple on months back
I pick 2 up at 10 bucks each (pentium pro 200 Mhz, 128 ram, 2.5 GB, all
the other normal stuff), so giving one to a girl is not a big deal. I am
quite happy using one for alll of my day to day works, so the other
shoudl be fast enough for her.

As for automatic updates, won't it crap out when it tries to upgrade ssh
or anythign else tied to the internet connection, so that it might well
be left in a unusable state?

Assuming that I block all the incoming ports and do nothign abotu
updates, how secure will the sytem be? Perhaps with somethign like LIDS
installed as well?

OT Mom hates me because I am the first serious b/f and am stealing her
baby, nothing more than that I don't think.
