If you're using a homebuilt, you shouldn't ever need to reference a
serial port. Well, that's assuming you didn't compile serial device
support in to the kernel which is why you wouldn't have a /dev/ttySx.
Nope, it's really very easy to do as I just did it myself. After
modprobing lirc_serial, I ran `irrecord -d /dev/lirc/0 Remote` and setup
my remote, copied 'Remote' to /etc/lircd.conf, and started lircd by the
init script. Also, you may need to `chmod 666 /dev/lircd` to allow
normal users access to the lircd device, which is what distributes the
commands. I made sure everything was working with a quick `irw` and then
started setting up XMMS's entries in .lircrc.
And I lived happily ever after, so far. The End.
P.S. Just for reference, I'm running Gentoo too, lirc-0.7.0-r1 because I
heard it supported devfs.
