Charlie,

follow Kevin's advice. Unless you're trying to find out how to compile from
source use the packages for your distribution.

At some other point you might find that the distribution's packages don't
meet your needs, which will cause you to need to compile from source. Until
that time save yourself the trouble, though :).

Hmmm. Looks like it found lex, but then couldn't use it.

Use your package manager to install lex if you continue with installing fro=
m
source.

I don't know how to search for what package owns lex in the RPM-world. A
trip to rpmfind might take care of that.
