update-alternatives --display x-window-manager

It sounds like you don't have sawfish or whatever gnome wants to use these
days or KDE installed.

If they are listed use update-alternatives to choose your preferred window
manager.

apt-get install sawfish-gnome

That should get all the dependencies.

I also suggest installing both gdm and kdm, but using kdm. That way if kdm
gets borken you can use gdm until kdm works again :).

Edit /etc/network/interfaces.

iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.0.5
        broadcast 192.168.0.255
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        gateway 192.168.0.1

Change numbers to match your network. There is a GUI tool. I have no idea
what it's called, though.

Check my guide to RCS for info on how to keep track of old versions of
config files.
