My experiences have me trusting the Western Digital drives much more
than Maxtor drives but we are all driven by the small amount of sampling
that we are allowed to do.
That Compaq chooses Maxtor (I don't know of the accuracy of this) would
encompass many economic realities that we might ignore if we were
choosing one drive for our own personal use.
My preferences have traditionally favored the IBM (now owned by Hitachi)
and the Western Digital over the Maxtor and Seagate brands but again,
that is more anecdotal - I probably haven't involved myself in the
selection of more than 100 hard drives in the past 3 years and much of
my experiences have been with designs that have long since been
discontinued and with SCSI type drives.
