Not anymore. On Redhat based distros (I think others have picked it up
now) you can just drop Truetype fonts in ~/.fonts and they'll get picked
up.

PS - If you have a recent version of GNOME you can type fonts:/// in
nautilus and see all you fonts, plus drag and drop them there also.
