I turn off font servers on laptops as it's one less service that can be
exploited and it's almost one less thing that can go boom during an upgrade=
=2E
X now gives direct access to the fonts you'd get from the font server. I
think you have to restart X to get new fonts, but that's generally gonna
happen fairly soon on a laptop anyway.
I'll let others kick in on the technical advantages and disadvantages.
