I can not speak for Knoppix, but I have used Debian for a number of years:
Go straight to it.

I would throw all of your important config files on a floppy.
/etc/hosts
/etc/hosts.allow
/etc/hosts.deny
/etc/resolv.conf
<network config files>
<knoppix's apt files>
<your .cshrc or .bashrc>
<maybe your XF86Config>

There are probably more, but I would do a clean
install on one, then transfer from one Debian to another.
