Well, normally I would argue with someone about what they prefer -
choice is what makes free software great. But I do have to argue one
little point...

This isn't the case at all, the case is that GNOME is seriously looking
at every configuration option and asking "Why?". It turns out that most
developers look at feature requests and solve them by adding a
configuration option. They do this instead of actually solving the
problem. If someone asks "I want to be able to change the color of the
font" there are multiple reasons they may be asking. It may be that
they just like different colors, but it's more likely that it doesn't
work in some environments, or they have some disability that changing
the color can help with. A developer can just add the option, or they
can look at the source of the problem and make it 'just work' in those
situations.
I think that if you talk to people who have switched from Linux to Mac
OS X, they've done it because Mac OS X 'just works'. They don't have to
configure it. You could argue that not allowing the user to change the
setting is treating them as stupid, or you could argue that it's letting
them do better things like they're job :)
So I guess, all in all, I'd prefer to have my computer 'just work' than
having to spend two days tweaking it :)
If you'd write up what was happening with GConf and what things you were
having to change on the command line I'd be happy to forward it to the
development lists.
