Keep your system current. Learn how to get security patches and get them
installed. Everyone who has a computer should learn that, regardless of OS,
etc.
You might also want to get bug fix updates.
I'm told RH now upgrades fine. That has not been my experience, but I
haven't tried it in the last couple of distros they've released.
debian has done just fine for me with upgrades in the last couple of years.
There was one known problem going from potato to woody, but otherwise it
went smooth.
