That only works for debian. As far as I know none of the other distros
support that out of the box.

I can re-write the 5 lines of code necessary for other distros to support
it, though :).

Rob - to clarify what Marcia said: debian parses /etc/modules at boot time
and loads the modules in that file. The mkinitrd script also loads modules
listed in that file in initrds, so new kernels are more likely to work :).

When not using /etc/modules you can use modprobe to load the modules.
modprobe will search for dependencies and try to load them.
