I'll second its usefulness here. I just dd'd an entire partition so I
could back it up later with some compression. Wasn't fun though. 25Gb
over 100Mbit ethernet to an NFS share was a bit slower that I might have
liked. However, I know the data is identical because I did an md5 check
afterwards so I now have a 25Gb file that is completely identical, byte
by byte, of a hard disc partition. Unfortunately, it's got 14Gb free in
it that I don't have access to. Still though, "dd if=3D/dev/drive
of=3D/file" is basically making a plaster cast of something to preserve
the original.

No need to mount anything to use dd. At its most basic usage, it's
simply complicated cat or 'cp -b'. (But I'm not claiming that it
doesn't do much more, of course.)
