Actually if you look at the DOCS it looks intimidating, but once you get
going it's not as bad as it looks. If you follow the DOCS word for word the
install goes smooth. Actually I was quite suprised. As for Debian, I
couldn't tell you. The only experience I have had is with installing
packages. Now installing Gentoo has no fancy install like Redhat, Suse,
Madrake, etc., but the docs are written quite well. Also, the user forums
are very active. When I posted a question someone usually answered within
30 minutes. Support although it is just peer support is awsome. Now you
have to be patient. My average install, given breaks and stuff takes 2-3
days. Now it only takes about 1 day to do the basic install. I use X and
KDE so that tacks on a lot of time. Keep in mind this is for a 2ghz P4.
Now that 2-3 days is the machine working not you.
Like said earlier, it depends on what kind of system you need. When I teach
Linux Forensics courses, I introduce Redhat because of the ease of
installation and given that the examiner is probably new to Linux. Now in
my lab I only have 1 Rehat system left, because I migrated to Gentoo. I
feel it is well worth it, but I am a computer geek and love to see how much
I can sqeeze out of my system.
