Mark,
Two things come to mind.
1. I bet the PCMCIA slot on the 486 is not 32bit (CardBus), so if the card
you are pluging is CardBus it won't work.
2. What kernel did you install? The 2.4 kernel supports hot swapping of
PCMCIA cards and USB devices.
