I'm just working with xine as it was installed
with Red Hat 7.3.

Can Gentoo be used on top of a Red Hat 7.3
installation? Does it cause an essential change,
or does it just provide the porting tools?

The site says that MJPG is handled natively.
But then, what is the plugin that was missing?

I will try downloading all the stuff they pointed to,
and see if I get lucky.

I don't know much about my AGP video card.
The xine document seems to imply that I will
need Xv to run AVIs properly. Elsewhere it says
that it should work with a broad range of stuff,
so that'll be the last thing I mess with.

On the Windows side I downloaded a time-limited
codec that lets me view an MJPG AVI file using
Windows Media Player, but RealPlayer doesn't
find it. This codec will turn to a pumpkin
within a few weeks.
