I have an old ed 120 gb drive. Only reason I don't use it is because its
noisy as hell.

In this case I would really look into a small hardware update if you can as
your hitting a limit for replacement availability.

And if you get a new Seagate or wd drive (retail not OEM) you can usually
get some tools to sidestep some of those limits. But if the hardware can
see it Linux will use it.
