Well I do not have any inside scoop, but some of the laptops
available from Dell come with Linux, so
[a] you aren't paying the "tax" for software that won't get used; and
[b] of course YMMV if you change from one distro [it came with]
to another, but I would think that, in general, it should be
pretty linux friendly (at least, have hardware that can work
with FLOSS drivers - and not require blobs or "non-free"
      proprietary firmware).

Too Much Info:
---------------------
(if bored, skip the rest...)
I have never owned a Dell Laptop.
My only laptop in fact is one that I got used from Red 7.
It is an IBM Thinkpad.
"as built" [when bought new] It probably came with Windows
(it still has some kind of sticker to that effect), but Red 7
installed Ubuntu (I recently added a big Ubuntu sticker,
when I upped to the new LTS version 8.04 or whatever it is).
The HW has always been rock solid.
The software is even better now, than with the previous
LTS Ubuntu from 2006.
(e.g., I think it no longer requires use of a
  [sorta pseudo "Windows"] driver
  that relied on "ndiswrapper").
Also, now the [USB] mouse works without having to plug it
(via an adapter) in to a "mouse" port -- now it can
[when I don't need the USB port for something else!]
plug in to the USB port.
