Help splitting xp hd

I have never partitioned an xp hd before. Anything special? It is a 'reformat and re-install' due to corrupted system. Or can you just pop the system dvd in and it will just fix whatever is corrupted on the system? 

Dell demin. 520? iirc. She loaned it to kids and and and it wont find the onboard nic, but puppylinux and k-5.1.1 does find the world. The screen that should show network hardware is basically blank on xp. And once bsod came up when swapping back and forth on bootups. ran memtest v1.65 off 5.1.1 and one pass, good, no errors, so ram seems okay up to 500mb. 4gigs of ram. 

But would like to partition about 20 gigs for linux..if I can get a clean copy!! Neighbors 'crashed' system. Something wrong with the system occasional bsod.

Did I mention, 2/23/07 the FCC dropped all cw (AKA Morse code) testing for any class of license as a ham? Just pass the written exams.
