OK I got it working. It turns out that the new version of ppp that I
installed was not new enough! I got the latest and greatest:  ppp-2.3.11
(ppp-2.3.10 will not work with the 2.3.99 pre 3 kernel). Everything works
fine now, or at least so it seems.
