Hi Keith,
TrueNAS, FreeNAS over any single protocol like SMB, NFS etc because it does
them all. But more importantly it can do Object Storage. Object storage
is the future. Look into Minio on TrueNAS/FreeNAS.

Minio will set up an Object store on your local NAS and then you can
deliver file access over ReST/ HTTP/HTTPS
