Subject: Re: TrueNAS vs Samba
I use TrueNAS. It basically makes it simple to set up a dedicated SMB
file server, and simple to maintain. I would recommend it for those
reasons, as long as you have the dedicated hardware to support it:

* a dedicated boot / OS drive
* two additional hard drives (or more) for the storage, and
* an ethernet port. Wifi not allowed.

There's nothing inherently different from using TrueNAS versus a
roll-your-own Ubuntu server, other than TrueNAS removes a lot of the
guesswork at the expense of complete customization.

There's other dedicated NAS OSs out there you can use too, such as Open
Media Vault and Rockstor. They each have their pros and cons, but
ultimately achieve the same goal.

For the average personal file server, I would take the simple approach
versus the roll-your-own these days, unless you have a specific reason
to roll-your-own.
