My Linux desktop experience is similar.

I started my Linux desktop journey circa 1997, dual booting between Windows
and Linux. Believe it or not, it was more stable than Windows 98 but there
were not many productivity apps.
I experimented with a stock X desktop, calculating the Hsync/Vsync
modelines till you got it right for *your* CRT monitor!

And then came the KDE desktop 0.9x, with its suite of applications. I have
been using the KDE desktop for quite a while.
And then it slowly became bloatware and I switched to Linux Mint (Mate)

The Linux Mint team has done a wonderful job putting together a desktop
distro that simply works with LTS and rolling upgrades.
Linux Mint may be the way to go if you are looking for ease of installation
and maintenance.

About 6 months ago, I tried Kubuntu 22.04 in a VM and was quite surprised
to see that it was nimble like when it first came out.
I have switched to Kubuntu 24.04 a couple of weeks ago.
