If it's _really_ old, there might not be a good native one, most people
just recommended to load synaptic. More recently there is Discover and
muon.
If this is the laptop that you haven't used in 6ish years, it may be
running kubuntu 16.04 and that is no longer supported, so your upgrades
will fail.
I'd recommend backing up your home directory and then doing a fresh
install. If you haven't used Kubuntu since you put that laptop aside,
you're in for a real treat. It's a lot leaner, faster, and just a joy
to use compared to years ago. While KDE classically took a lot of it's
look and feel from windows you'll likely notice that it's come back
around and now Microsoft has been taking features from KDE.
