It certainly can't hurt. If I have to job-hunt again, the true
statement, "The first kernel patch I wrote compiled, booted, and fixed
the problem." will be on my resume somewhere. The maintainer wrote a
*better* patch a day later, but hey, small victories.

Being a generalist can be extremely useful, as it allows you to
contribute to more than one area of work. And potentially save people's
butts when the specialist is on vacation and the specialist's (code,
database, whatever) suddenly barfs. I have never really regretted
learning new junk, though it's anyone's guess whether I'll ever use Java
again.
