My default is long random string with upper, lower, number and special
characters.

I have tried down to 8 characters as that certainly can't be too long if
that's the minimum ( also tried 20, 12, 10 and other lengths ). I have
tried with a single special character and a variety of those. I have tried
short and without special characters.

At this point I should just look for hacked steam accounts and try one of
those passwords :).

I do presume it's generally working for people as valve likely tracks new
account creation and would have noticed if that had been 0 since June.
