Subject: How to eliminate password prompt after lid up?
On my Linux 19 Cinnamon thinkpad, when I lift the lid, it always
requires a password. How can I eliminate that?

I have tried two proposed solutions that I found from searching,
but the unwanted password prompt is still there.

(1) Open terminal and type "sudo passwd root". It prompts for
a password for the root account. I enter the admin password
then to "Preferences" and "Login Windows" then followed the
prompts but could not find a way to eliminate the password.

Next, I went here:
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=71680

And found this: enable auto login so that you don't need a password
to log in. Go to the Administration menu/Login screen and set up
an auto login for a user. But again, following all the prompts
did not give me the desired solution:

System Settings > Administration > Login Window > Users > Automatic
login >
Username [joe]

What am I doing wrong? How can I eliminate this annoying requirement
to enter a password again every time I shut the lid and open it again?
