Problem solved:
sudo chown -R www-data:myusername /var/www/vhost
then
sudo find /path/to/your/wordpress/install/ -type d -exec chmod 775 {} \;
sudo find /path/to/your/wordpress/install/ -type f -exec chmod 664 {} \;
