KeePassX uses the KeePass2.x file format. It's supposed to be compatable.
I haven't ever used KeePass2 directly, so can't speak to actual usage vs
theory.
I did just try KeePassXC ( I was recently reminded about it from an EFF
guide ). The KeePassXC fork is getting better maintenance than KeePassX
and has added some excellent features.
It allows generating a random string from anywhere in the UI, so it's now
easier to have random strings for email addresses and security questions.
The random generator also has a multi-word passphrase option, which will
be much easier for security questions that might have to be answered over
the phone.
KeePassXC has a merge option for merging in changes from another database
file.
I still don't see a way to sync out or export a sub-set of keys, but you
can drag and drop accounts from one DB to another. Drag and drop moves it,
but <ctrl><shift> drag and drop copies.
Still not near as functional as it should be, but makes it much easier to
keep files in sync.
