Well, if wired works and wireless doesn’t, you know that the software on the computer is capable of getting an IP address.

But the wireless side doesn’t work. Well, what are the things that would cause that? (Try to come up with your own list before looking at mine J)

My ‘list off the top of my head’ is:

1 – wireless disabled (e.g. by hardware switch or in software configuration) (if there is a switch on your laptop to turn the wireless off, I’d check this first since its trivial. My HP minibook has this kind of switch – drives me crazy when I forget to toggle it back to ‘enabled’…)

2 – wireless hardware no longer connected to motherboard

3 – wireless hardware no longer connected to WiFI antenna (I’d put this as most likely).

4 – wireless hardware damaged by trip to repair shop (unlikely, but possible)

Stephen asks some good questions for diagnosing things… Also, what does ‘ifconfig’ say?

Michael,

I've heard in the past that when people fix the keyboard in a laptop. That sometimes that can knock off the wireless adapter
by accident. Have you tried by an Ethernet cable?

I just got my laptop back from the repair shop and it isn't getting an ip address. It was in the shop because the keyboard needed replacing. Can you help me figure out why it isn't getting the address?
