IME, it depends a lot on the workload. If you've got a heavily-trafficked
website, N VMs on VMWare just can't perform as well as N bare-metal machines
with similar specs to the VMs. If the amount of traffic is small, you can use
just about any config you'd like, and no one will notice performance problems.
It's only when you get slashdotted/dugg/reddited/drudged that you actually
notice things are crawling.
