Lots of different types of developers in lots of different areas, but if you live in New York city or San Francisco and get paid under 6 figures as a developer you are not making a good living. Likewise if you live in Phoenix and make that same $99k you live like a king. Point being national averages are pretty misleading statistics.

I happened upon this article. It says "According to figures from the Department of Labor, this job fetches a median salary that's just under six figures at $99,000. Those in the bottom 10 percent make about $62,800, and the top 10 percent is sitting pretty at $148,850."
Seems a little high.
