Hello Betty:

There is a directory in your home directory that holds all your "Desktop"
(or X environment) information.

Although it is a bit radical. the problem will most likely go away if you
remove that directory.
Problem is:
along with it, will go your wallpaper and any other customization or choice
you have made for your Desktop...

Besides, you can't delete the directory while you are logged in to X.

Finally, you don't have to "delete it", renaming it will do, so you can try,
test, and if it doesn't get fixed, restored it... :)

This is how you do it:
Start your puter all the way to the point where it asks you to log in.
Hit <Alt><Ctrl><F4>
In the shell that appears, log in with your username and password (password
won't show)

Then rename:
mv -v ~/.kde ~/DOT.kde
or
mv -v ~/.gnome ~/DOT.gnome

Hit <Alt><Ctrl><F7> to restore the X login, login and test.
You can restore your environment by reversing the previous steps.
YMMV
Good luck! :)
ET

PS: Free advice, you can't sue me! ;-)
