I would bet that a 400ft cable would work just fine.

I worked in a building where we had a few 600 and 700 ft lines. There were
some intermittent problems, but they usually worked well.
We eventually put in a switch to serve that side of the building, but the
switch was on a 700 ft line and it worked fine.

If it's for just one line, try the 400 ft first and if you have problems go
with the switch.
If it's multiple, run a 400 for the switch, and then feed the systems from
the switch.

Yes, or you could just run 400 feet of cable, I mean, after all, they do
come in 1000 foot boxes, right?!! ha ha

Have you ever tried putting connectors on both ends of a 500' box and seeing
what happens? I've not tried it, any takers?
