So it can do 8x and 4x. I tend to use "auto" but you may want to try it
at 4x and see if that works better.

I/O error is not what you want to see in this case. What (if anything)
does dmesg say about the drive immediately afterward? I haven't seen the
tracksize: option used but I haven't burned a DVD in a few months.

It does? Not enough info to tell for sure. Try the same drive under 'Doze,
and if it works there, it's a software problem or a problem with the media
you're using. Seriously, I had some cheaper DVD+Rs that all seemed to have
a defect on the outer edge, so burning anything larger than 3.9G failed
miserably with them. Oh well.
