Alan: Thanks for this great practical example!
Are you using KDE 4 or Kubuntu?
A) Kubuntu uses Kcontrol for this. Is this missing on your menu?
run kcontrol from terminal:
$ kcontrol
or right click on desktop, choose ¨run application¨
enter "kcontrol" - run program.
or
ALT F2 - type "kcontrol"
Add it to the Kmenu, if you like?
Kubuntu wants users to use the "System Settings" thing on the K Menu.
I'm not sure if this "System Settings" thing is a part of KDE, or something
Kubuntu cooked up.
When we developed the FreakBox for freegeek.org
(our custom distro before embracing the well engineered Ubuntu) we ran into
and fixed a great many such strangenesses in Debian. Kubuntu is doing likewise!
B) KDE 4 (are you using Fedora 9?) file associations are read upon newlogin. Or if you change it on the fly this should happen automagically as soon as FAM notices, but you can also do it manually. Just open a Konsole and execute:
$ kbuildsycoca
[NOTE: (use grep to find the extensions and associations {as already suggested}):]
$ grep digiKam ~/.kde/share/config/*

I doubt it would be in the digikam rc, since it's kde system wide setting... porbably in ksyscoca, but I don't know how to play with that...

don't know for sure but I would guess something like...
grep digikam ~/.kde/share/config/*
should list the file with the setting (but probably list more than 1
file)
