The quality of SuSE took a sharp nosedive around version 8.0,

Are you running this thing as x86_64, or x86? This could be
important, and it's not clear from what you wrote.

Install the evil binary-only module from nVidia and use it.

Is X using the evil nVidia module? "grep Driver
/etc/X11/xorg.conf" should return one line with "nvidia" in
it. You also need to have the evil kernel module loaded.
"lsmod | grep nv" should return at least one line with
"nvidia" in it.

ALSA is "legacy"? Good grief. Post the output of "lspci |
grep -i audio" so we can see what sound chip you have. What's
worked for me is just running alsaconf as root from the command
line, but then I'm not using SuSE. Also, ALSA always starts
all sound cards up as muted. Most distros have a script that
runs at boot that pulls the volumes that were set at the last
shutdown and sets the card to those volumes.

Also also, check the plugs. The last motherboard I bought, I
plugged the speakers into the wrong jack, and wasted half an
hour wondering what my ALSA setup had barfed on.
