From: Frank Mandato > I have a couple of minor glitches with [Suse Linux 10.3] The quality of SuSE took a sharp nosedive around version 8.0, so much so that I switched to Gentoo. AFAICT, there have always been many, many stupid bugs in SuSE that are just not there on Debian-based things or Gentoo. > Gigabyte G1 Turbo with on board sound and lan. This could be important, and it's not clear from what you wrote. > NVidia GEForce6800GS video card. > Problem No.1: I have no mouse pointer, yet the mouse works. > I edited the xorg.conf file to turn off the HW [cursor] and > then turn on the SW [cursor], no success. You also need to have the evil kernel module loaded. "lsmod | grep nv" should return at least one line with "nvidia" in it. > No sound. The legacy alsa driver does not produce any sound. > I had always had trouble with alsa ALSA is "legacy"? Good grief. Post the output of "lspci | grep -i audio" so we can see what sound chip you have. What's worked for me is just running alsaconf as root from the command line, but then I'm not using SuSE. Also, ALSA always starts all sound cards up as muted. Most distros have a script that runs at boot that pulls the volumes that were set at the last shutdown and sets the card to those volumes. Also also, check the plugs. The last motherboard I bought, I plugged the speakers into the wrong jack, and wasted half an hour wondering what my ALSA setup had barfed on. -- Matt G / Dances With Crows The Crow202 Blog: http://crow202.dyndns.org:8080/wordpress/ There is no Darkness in Eternity/But only Light too dim for us to see --------------------------------------------------- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
