Wayne,
Look at OpenVPN. I use it for all my VPN needs as it's pretty straight
forward. I'm not familiar with monowall, but a quick Google for openvpn
monowall came up with

Network Manager has a nice openvpn plugin as well, so you can just click
the icon and then select your network and it'll connect you up.
