IE vs Netscape was already mentioned.
MS Word was free until Wordperfect was marginalized.

I'm sure we can all put our heads together to come up with examples of
Microsoft using monopoly power to squash competition or just find some
articles on the net about it. But my point was that MS will do whatever
it takes to stay the dominant OS. If that means giving the OS away for
free they will do it. All of the MS stack runs on windows. So if
you're willing to use a MS OS you're probably going to pay for the rest
of the stack. If you are willing to use another OS you're probably not
going to pay for MS software. They need to keep as many people as
possible on MS Windows.
