Cat 5E may work, but Cat 6 is recommended. If you want to purchase
decent cables at a cheep price, I recommend ShowMeCables.com. As for
hardware, I like Netgear, as it is inexpensive for what you get, but
much like Black and Decker before the parsed out DeWalt, you need to
read the fine print to make sure your getting what you really want.

For gigabit ethernet you'll need Category 5E cables, Category 6 cables
will work as well. If you look on the cables themselves it will say what
they are (for example, "CAT 5E").
