I had never heard of dirvish before yet I see now that it even predates
the (now seminal) rsync snapshots essay by Mike Rubel
(
http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/). I use one of the
scores of tools based on Mike's paper... rsnapshot.
It looks like the main difference between dirvish and rsnapshot (other
than rsnapshot being easier to setup) is that dirvish allows you to
backup multiple systems with *shared* trees! That's unique. Rsnapshot
will allow you to backup multiple systems (and I do) but if you backup
/usr, for instance, it will be unique at each system level. Dirvish
allows you to share /usr between them. Interesting.
Does anybody know if that's dirvish's only real advantage? I can't seem
to find any page online that compares dirvish and rsnapshot.
