On the SystemRescueCD there is a testdisk utility. There is a link on
http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page that points to
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk so you can read about it. Looks
like it does the analysis and presents you with suggestions before
committing any changes. Maybe worth a look? I'm sure it is available from
the command line but if you startx on the rescue CD and right click on the
desktop, it is also available in that context menu.
