I was an engineering/scientific programmer/analyst (FORTRAN mostly).
When I was about 50 I had the opportunity to help administer a 3Com
departmental LAN. After about two years I was lucky--the FORTRAN
programming was dying, but I had the opportunity to get on the job
training as a Unix SysAdmin. That lasted until retirement.
