No - he can ping both ip addresses from localhost because from
localhost, both addresses exist and are reachable.

If he moves to another computer, then only one of them can be
pinged...the other will go unanswered - that will answer his question.

Normally, I don't assign two addresses from the same subnet on different
physical network adapters but use virtual adaptors off the same physical
adaptor. i.e.

eth0 10.0.1.75
eth0:1 10.0.1.76
eth0:2 10.0.1.9

eth1 10.1.1.75
eth1:1 10.1.1.76
eth1:2 10.1.1.9

though you can do bonding with two network adaptors on the same
network/subnet so you can clearly do what you want to do.
